Training tip of the month:
Motivation
Often the question and topic of motivation comes up. Usually it stems from “I’m losing motivation” or “trying to get motivated”. Both of these are misguided and really the wrong question to the wrong person. In fact, they shouldn’t be directed to anyone else other than yourself.
Motivation needs to come from within, not from external sources. There are many reasons for this:
Outside sources are always variable
The moments you most need motivation is when you’re alone
Goals need to be aligned with abilities
Outside sources are variable
The one thing that is constant is you. Things such as an upcoming event, person you want to impress, celebrity you want to mimic, coach you are working with, program you are following or your training partner. Certainly all of these can help give you a boost and “feed the fire” but should not be the main source of motivation as they don’t last forever (even Arnold is aging).
The moments you most need motivation is when you’re alone
On the days when you’ve lost your mojo, often this is when you’re in your car and smell food that you shouldn’t be eating. Could be your alarm clock is going off when your sleeping like a rock. Perhaps it’s after work and you hear about a social function that sounds fun. All of these (plus many others we could make) have the common theme: you’re by yourself and there is something distracting you from your goal.
Goals need to be aligned with abilities
This isn’t to say you shouldn’t work for something that you think might be difficult to achieve. Rather, it is saying that don’t set goals higher than you are willing to work for. For example, if you’re a single parent and can realistically get 3 workouts in a week, it’s probably not wise to set the goal that you are going to win a triathlon. However, getting your bodyfat to an all-time low level and perhaps running your best time on the mile would be very doable.
So what are good sources of motivation???
These are what every person must discover for him or herself. Some ideas are:
Being the best you can be at this point in your life
Improve upon something that you have not been able to achieve (or repeat what you have done in the past)
Prove to yourself you have what it takes to do something
Having the satisfaction that you are in the top tier of individuals who actually achieve their goals
While these might come off as self-centered or arrogant, they are internal sources of motivation and don’t require stimuli from external factors. Of course, goal setting is still just as important (see our previous article on that here). Additionally, don’t misread that external sources/resources shouldn’t be utilized. Proper programming including nutrition, training and other factors (which can come from outside sources) should be applied but they are not the source of motivation, rather direction and guidance.
Keep making everyday count, effort in equals results out!

Nutri-Sport Supplement Tip: Growth Hormone: The Truth
As I often see many supplement stores and advertisements claiming they can restore your natural growth hormone levels or even BOOST them to supernatural proportions, I feel it is necessary to extinguish these false claims. Another false fact being touted is muscle growth due to increased GH levels. Below, I will break apart each of these topics so that you may all have a better understanding of what GH really does for you and if it’s possible (legally) to gain a leg up over anyone else.
First off, the human body operates on a system that has a capacity. When your genetic potential is reached on GH levels, you have reached the ceiling and your body will not take it any higher naturally. The ONLY way to reach epic proportions of GH within your body is through injections that surpass the actual output from your brain. Of course, obtaining GH without a prescription from your physician is illegal and quite costly. If someone is preaching to you while browsing supplements, telling you that they have the holy grail of GH increase, just go ahead and walk right out the door.
Secondly, the list of supplements that have actually been proven to increase GH levels is so miniscule, that unless you are versed in the published medical documents, you can easily be lied to and sold hopes and dreams. GABA (gamma-amino-butyric acid) is the only product on my shelves that carries any evidence into a GH increase. All this fuss over “deer antler” spray is a complete hoax. The only reason why it has gained popularity is because some major league ball player blamed all his success on it alone, while he was also using other substances to avoid scrutiny.
Now, the real question here is.. What does GH increase actually do for you? I’ve had customers come in telling me that they heard GH would create solid muscle gains in a short period of time. They also picked that knowledge up from someone hoping to push a product out the door. I’m here to tell you now, that GH does NOT create hypertrophy in contractile muscle tissue. It is not anabolic in nature. Can it help your recovery? Yes. Will it make you bigger? No. This seems to be he biggest misconception about GH.
However, it CAN help the quality of your sleep, skin, well-being, loss of adipose fatty tissue and increase your sex drive. None of those are bad things, but let’s atleast get the facts straight! Hopefully, this has given a little insight into the wild world of supplements promoting epic gains with a “deer antler” based spray. Be weary of sales pitches that sound too good to be true. As customers of Nutri-Sport, I certainly hope you feel informed every single time that you come into the store. I base ALL of my advice/reviews on scientific data and personal experience.
