Nutrition Tip: What is the Whey?

Whey is the name given to the liquid that’s produced when milk coagulates; it’s obtained commercially as a by-product of the cheese production process. Whey contains globular proteins that are separated by processing, which also removes fat, lactose and other unwanted components and ultimately creates whey protein. Once this basic whey protein is created it’s further processed to create the three different commercially available forms – concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysate.

wheyWhey Concentrate (i.e. ON Performance Whey) is the least-processed form of whey, and also the most affordable. It’s filtered to remove some fat and lactose while retaining larger protein molecules. Individuals who aren’t concerned with excess fat or lactose and the potency of their whey protein find concentrate to be suitable for their needs. Whey Concentrate typically contains 70 to 80% protein.

Whey Isolate (i.e. NOW Foods Whey Isolate) is processed similarly to concentrate, but the filtration process captures more fat and lactose and leaves a higher concentration of protein, typically 90% or more. Individuals who are lactose intolerant and appreciate purity and potency find Whey Isolate to be a good alternative that combines purity, potency and affordability.

Whey blends are often a combination of the concentrate, isolate and some hydroslate.  This allows for some of the benefits that come with each different type of whey, but usually with a lower price tag than pure isolate or hydroslate.  Generally the flavor and texture is a bit better too.  An example of this is the MTS Machine Whey.

Whey Hydrolysate (i.e. 1st Phorm Phormula 1) is a relatively newer form compared to concentrate and isolate. As the name hydrolysate suggests, this form of whey is subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis, a processing method that utilizes enzymes and water to reduce whey protein molecules into smaller, more easily digested free-form proteins and peptides. This form of whey protein is a great option for active individuals who need rapid protein absorption and utilization.

proteinWhey Protein Hydrolysate is a high quality protein that is enzymatically hydrolyzed (partially predigested) into smaller peptides for increased bioavailability and absorption compared to other whole proteins. In addition, this protein hydrolysate powder is instantized for easy mixability and dispersion.

Whey Protein Hydrolysate also has naturally occurring Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s), and is ideal for active individuals. Whey protein is considered to have the highest Biological Value of any protein source – superior in essential amino acid content to beef, milk, casein or soy.
